Europa League Final with Million-Euro Consequences
SC Freiburg on the Verge of a Million-Euro Coup: How Much Money the Europa League Final Brings
SC Freiburg is playing in Istanbul not only for a European title. The final on Wednesday (9:00 p.m.) against Aston Villa also carries significant economic weight for the Bundesliga club – because double-digit million sums have long been distributed in the Europa League, and a triumph would immediately trigger additional revenue.
The club has increased its earnings this season in the second most important European competition to around 33 million euros from UEFA bonuses accrued so far. This figure explains why the final evening means much more to Freiburg than just sporting prestige.
The Final Appearance Has Already Massively Increased Freiburg's Revenue
Even the road to the final has paid off financially. Reaching the final alone brought seven million euros into the club's coffers. Previously, the bonuses – including starting money – had totaled around 25 million euros.
The package includes, among other things:
- Europa League starting money: €4.31 million
- Round of 16: €2.35 million
- Quarterfinals: €2.5 million
- Semifinals: €4.2 million
In addition, there is a so-called value bonus, the amount of which depends on the respective media market and past performance; in this case, it is estimated at around eight million euros. In total, it becomes clear: reaching the final is not only a sporting highlight, but has already elevated Freiburg's European season to an outstanding economic dimension even before kickoff.
A Title Would Trigger the Next Financial Leap
The biggest lever now lies in the final itself. If Freiburg wins against Aston Villa, six million euros in prize money will be added. Additionally, four million euros would be due for participating in the Super Cup against the Champions League winner.
Even more significant is the consequence for the next season: the Europa League winner qualifies for the Champions League. This would guarantee starting money of 18.62 million euros. This is where the true dimension of the final lies: a title would not only further boost the already impressive Europa League balance, but would also immediately secure Freiburg reliably planned, firmly promised revenue from the most lucrative European club competition.
Even Without Ticket Revenue, the Final Is an Economic Exception
It is also notable: the sums mentioned so far do not include ticket revenue from international home games – which, according to reports, are in the millions. Thus, even with a conservative view excluding spectator income, Freiburg's European campaign represents a financially exceptional season.
Sporting success and economic return are directly linked in this competition. By reaching the final, Freiburg has already created an extraordinary starting position. The final in Istanbul will now decide whether this becomes "just" a great international evening – or a financial leap that can noticeably strengthen the club beyond the summer.
