Friedrichsbau Lichtspiele | Program & Tickets

The Friedrichsbau Lichtspiele is one of the Freiburg venues where you not only watch a movie but experience a piece of cinema culture. Since its opening on April 16, 1911, the house on Kaiser-Joseph-Straße has stood for a combination of tradition, carefully curated arthouse programming, and a very clear location advantage right in the city center. Today, the cinema presents itself with four halls, a total of 476 seats, and a mix of film classics, premieres, sneak previews, documentaries, children's cinema, and festival highlights. The official house profile describes the Friedrichsbau Lichtspiele as a destination for arthouse cinema, film classics, and festival highlights; the dedicated program pages additionally show how strongly the house focuses on diversity, language versions, and special series. For visitors, this is practical: central location, clear ticket rules without reservation, and a house that visibly preserves its history without standing still. Therefore, those searching for Friedrichsbau Lichtspiele Freiburg, program, tickets, directions, or parking will find not just a venue but a grown cultural house with its own identity and high recognition value. Current Program, Sneaks, and Film Series at Friedrichsbau

The program is one of the strongest reasons why the Friedrichsbau Lichtspiele has a fixed place in the cinema calendar for many Freiburg residents. The official program page is not just a list of individual films but a small navigation center for the current cinema offerings: visitors can filter by time, cinema, language version, film type, and title, quickly finding what they are really looking for. This is where the profile of the house becomes particularly clear. In addition to the ongoing repertoire, premieres, the Friedrichsbau sneak previews, OmU and OV screenings, children's and family films, documentaries, and special formats regularly appear. The house page also mentions fixed series, including the French Film Week, Cinema! Italia!, Wednesday Nite at the Movies, Met Live from New York, Queer Film Night, Exhibition on Screen, and Adventure Children's Cinema. This makes it clear: Friedrichsbau is not a cinema that only focuses on mainstream but a place for discoveries, reunions, and cinematic surprises. This mix also makes the search queries around program, sneak, and arthouse so relevant. Those looking for a cinema program in Freiburg with personality will find a house that curates consciously rather than filling it arbitrarily. This is attractive for regular guests because they get reliable series and recurring focuses, and exciting for new visitors because they can always discover different film worlds. The program page also shows that the cinema is very much geared towards current usage situations: today, tomorrow, this week, and weekend can be displayed separately, so spontaneous visits work just as well as planned evenings. ([friedrichsbau-kino.de](https://friedrichsbau-kino.de/programm/?utm_source=openai))

Particularly interesting is that the program profile of the Friedrichsbau signals not only a wide selection but also a certain attitude. Arthouse here does not mean niche for the sake of niche, but a visible curation with an international perspective. This is evident in the combination of non-national European films, original versions with subtitles, and series that often lead to discussions after the film. At the same time, the house remains open to a broader audience: children's cinema, family screenings, and well-known titles are just as much a part of the offering as premieres and festivals. This creates a search field that fits very well with the keywords program, sneak, OmU, original version, and film series. For SEO, this is important because people searching for Friedrichsbau often mean not just the place but also the experience behind it: What is showing today? Are there sneak previews? Is OmU shown? Is there a special festival? The answer is essentially: yes, and regularly. The house maintains a strong series character that builds trust for returning visitors and makes orientation easier for new guests. For search intent, it is also valuable that the cinema keeps its program information very current and structures the overview according to specific time frames. This creates a page that not only informs but actually leads to booking because the program and ticket logic are closely linked. Directions, Stops, and Parking in Freiburg City Center

The location of the Friedrichsbau Lichtspiele is one of its greatest practical advantages. The cinema is located at Kaiser-Joseph-Straße 268-270, right in the center of Freiburg im Breisgau and, according to the official directions page, in the city center between Martinstor and Dreisam. This places the house exactly where pedestrians, public transport users, and visitors with short route planning feel most comfortable. The directions page also points out that the Holzmarkt stop for lines 2 and 3 is directly in front of the entrance. Additionally, the Bertholdsbrunnen, as a central hub for bus and train connections, is reachable within a few minutes on foot. For the question of parking, the information is also clear: two parking garages are located in direct proximity on Rempartstraße, and the Schloßberg parking garage is also within easy reach. Therefore, those coming from the city center benefit from a very dense infrastructure without being reliant on their own parking area. This is an important SEO factor for terms like directions, parking, address, and location because practical planning for cinema visitors is often just as important as the film itself. The location on a heavily frequented city center street also brings the advantage that a cinema visit can be easily combined with dining, a walk, or a subsequent drink. In terms of search intent, this means: visitors want to know not only where the cinema is but also how easily it can be reached and whether arriving by car or public transport is better. The Friedrichsbau speaks to the fact that both options work well, even though the city center location naturally makes public transport and walking particularly attractive. Therefore, those searching for Friedrichsbau Lichtspiele directions or Friedrichsbau Lichtspiele parking are actually looking for a stress-free, planable evening, and the location of this house is very well suited for that. ([friedrichsbau-kino.de](https://friedrichsbau-kino.de/service/anfahrt/))

From the perspective of event guests or groups, the location is also interesting because the house is in the city center and is described in the official event information as modern, timeless, and barrier-free. The Freiburg Convention Bureau names the Friedrichsbau as a venue with a large hall, small hall, open gallery, and a foyer with a bar that can be used exclusively with a full booking. This underscores that the location is practical not only for cinema visitors but also for formats with receptions, lounge situations, or additional programs. Especially for longer evenings, the proximity to parking garages, stops, and city center paths is a real added value because visitors do not arrive in an isolated commercial area but directly in an urban environment. For everyday visits, it also applies: the city center location requires a bit more orientation than a parking space in front of the door but rewards with maximum flexibility. Those arriving by train or tram can get on very directly; those coming by car will find several parking options in short distance according to the official directions. Thus, the Friedrichsbau fulfills exactly what many users expect behind the keyword parking: no complicated access, but clear, reliable paths to a traditional house. Seating, Halls, and Capacity: This is How the Friedrichsbau is Structured

The capacity of the Friedrichsbau Lichtspiele is particularly important for search queries regarding seating, seating plan, and capacity, and here the house provides very concrete data. Today, the Friedrichsbau has four halls with 270, 140, 38, and 28 seats. This results in a total of 476 seats, which is a very solid size for an inner-city arthouse cinema. The largest hall is located in the basement, while Apollo 1 is on the ground floor and also has a relevant size with 140 seats. This clear hall structure also explains why the official accessibility page goes into detail about individual rooms: not every hall is equally accessible, and for planning a visit, it is helpful to know in which room the desired film is showing. For people searching for Friedrichsbau Lichtspiele seating or Friedrichsbau Lichtspiele seating plan, this is important because the choice of hall has immediate effects on comfort, visibility, and accessibility in everyday life. The cinema does not work with a classic event plan in the sense of a large multifunctional hall but with a finely graduated cinema concept in which the different hall sizes are used according to film, target audience, and demand. This structure makes it possible to simultaneously show large evening performances, small special series, and unique children's or documentary film formats. For visitors, this means a good balance of intimacy and selection: the house remains manageable without appearing small. Therefore, search queries often contain the implicit question of whether the Friedrichsbau offers a more intimate atmosphere or larger visitor numbers. The answer is: both. The large halls carry the main operation, while the smaller rooms create program diversity and flexibility. This fits excellently with the arthouse character of the house and also explains why many people specifically search for seating plan, seats, and hall categories. ([friedrichsbau-kino.de](https://friedrichsbau-kino.de/unsere-kinos/friedrichsbau/))

For event and group inquiries, the Freiburg Convention Bureau adds a second perspective to the picture: there, the Friedrichsbau is described as a location with a large hall, small hall, open gallery, and foyer with bar. This is particularly interesting because it shows that the house functions not only as a cinema but also as a flexible event address. The open gallery can be used as a cloakroom or lounge, the foyer with bar is exclusively available with a full booking, and the equipment includes bar, preparation kitchen, tables, chairs, as well as bar and lounge furniture. For capacity in event contexts, it is also relevant that the large hall is indicated there for up to 266 people, while the small hall accommodates a maximum of 20 people, and the open gallery can hold 15 people. These figures are not the primary numbers for a normal cinema visit, but they show how versatile the venue is. In SEO logic, this answers the search intent behind capacity and seating plan very well: the Friedrichsbau is not a rigid cinema with only one hall size but a multi-part house that allows different forms of use depending on the occasion. This is precisely why the topic of seating in the Friedrichsbau is relevant for both cinema guests and event planners. Those attending a screening usually experience a classic cinema with several halls; those planning an event see a versatile city center location with a clearly defined room structure. Both belong to the profile of the house. ([meeting.freiburg.de](https://meeting.freiburg.de/convention-freiburg/congress/house/Friedrichsbau-Freiburg-FIT00020070845315311))

History since 1911 and Special Highlights

The history of the Friedrichsbau Lichtspiele is one of the strongest content anchors of the house. On Easter Sunday, April 16, 1911, the Lichtspiele were opened, and the official house page explicitly emphasizes that the Friedrichsbau is among the five oldest cinemas in Germany that still date back to the founding era. Even this origin gives the cinema a special cultural depth. In the development of the house, it is also easy to see how a historical cinema house became a modern arthouse cinema: in 1929, the ground-level hall became the balcony of the newly added Friedrichsbau hall in the basement, in 1971 this balcony was separated again as Apollo Studio, today Apollo 1, in 1980 Apollo 2 was created from part of the ticket hall, and in 1983 Apollo 3 from part of the lower hall. These construction and usage layers make the Friedrichsbau exciting to this day because you not only watch films in it but can also read the transformation of a traditional house into a contemporary cinema. This also explains why search terms like history, special features, and photos in connection with the house are relevant: people are interested here not only in a program but in a house with a visible past. Since 1998, the Friedrichsbau has been run as an arthouse cinema by Michael Wiedemann, and since 2012, the cinemas Friedrichsbau, Harmonie, and Kandelhof have belonged to the owners of the Freiburg arthouse film distribution KOOL Filmdistribution, Ludwig Ammann and Michael Isele. In summer 2024, ventilation and foyer were renovated so that the house can shine in new splendor. Additionally, it received the top award for an outstanding annual film program 2024, which underscores the programmatic ambition of the house. For visitors, this results in a rarely harmonious picture: historical substance, vibrant present, pronounced program work, and a clear cultural identity. ([friedrichsbau-kino.de](https://friedrichsbau-kino.de/unsere-kinos/friedrichsbau/))

Among the special highlights of the house is also its place in the Freiburg cinema network. The official house page describes the Friedrichsbau Lichtspiele together with Harmonie and Kandelhof as Freiburg's independent cinemas with over 500 films per year and dozens of premieres with guests. The membership in the Europa Cinemas network is also highlighted; in 2007, the Friedrichsbau and Kandelhof were awarded as the first German cinemas for the best program in Europe. This is a strong quality feature for search queries regarding special features or highlight locations because it proves the credibility of the house beyond Freiburg. The profile also includes the summer night cinema in the cozy courtyard of the Schwarzes Kloster, organized by the Friedrichsbau, as well as the tradition of showing a short film before each evening performance in the largest hall. The Adventure Children's Cinema with its pocket money rate of 3 euros is also a distinctive feature that makes the house attractive for families. Taken together, this creates a cinema that does not use its history as a museum but as a foundation for a lively program. Therefore, those searching for Friedrichsbau Lichtspiele history do not encounter a static text about an old building but an ongoing narrative of reconstruction, program profile, awards, and cultural care. This mix makes the Friedrichsbau a location that people love to write about, photograph, and recommend. ([friedrichsbau-kino.de](https://friedrichsbau-kino.de/unsere-kinos/friedrichsbau/))

Tickets, Prices, and Reservations in Everyday Life

The ticket logic of the Friedrichsbau is pleasantly clear and thus ideal for search queries regarding tickets and prices. The official price page explicitly states that no reservations are possible, neither by phone nor by email. Therefore, those who want to go to the Friedrichsbau cinema should plan directly with the advance sale or with a visit to the box office. This box office opens in the Friedrichsbau 20 minutes before the start of the first performance. Price-wise, the Friedrichsbau is listed according to official information from Wednesday to Monday at 10.50 euros, on cinema Tuesday in all cinemas at 8.00 euros, and for everyone under 25 years at 7.50 euros. Additionally, there is a 12 percent discount for Cinecard holders and their companions; the discount even applies to popcorn and drinks. For BZ cardholders, a 40 percent discount on regular ticket prices for themselves and a companion is mentioned on Thursdays. This is very valuable for the search intent of ticket prices because visitors can quickly assess whether a particular visit day is particularly worthwhile. The Cineville subscription is also mentioned, which makes the house additionally attractive for frequent visitors. For families, there is a particularly favorable rate of 3.00 euros for children and their companions at the Adventure Children's Cinema in the Friedrichsbau. The prices are therefore not only transparent but also surprisingly finely graduated. This strengthens the perception of the house as a public-friendly arthouse cinema that pays attention not only to program diversity but also to fair access. Those searching for Friedrichsbau Lichtspiele tickets or Friedrichsbau Lichtspiele prices essentially want to know whether the visit is uncomplicated and affordable. The answer is: yes, as long as one considers the no-reservation rule and the box office opening. ([friedrichsbau-kino.de](https://friedrichsbau-kino.de/service/eintrittspreise/))

In everyday life, this ticket structure is particularly pleasant because it reduces complexity. No long comparisons of contingents, no telephone pre-commitment, no uncertainty about whether a reservation still stands. Instead, there is a clear rule: arrive on time, get a ticket, watch a film. This fits well with a city center cinema with many walk-in effects and an audience that often decides spontaneously. At the same time, the pricing structure ensures that different user groups are addressed. Younger visitors benefit from fixed under-25 prices, Cinecard users from a continuous discount, frequent viewers from Cineville, and families from child-friendly special formats. This also very well addresses the search intent behind prices, box office, booking, and evening box office. In practice, it is also important that the ticket page places the pricing logic of the Friedrichsbau in the context of the other houses Harmonie and Kandelhof, so that visitors can quickly keep track. This builds trust and reduces friction in planning. For SEO, this is a strong signal because the frequently searched terms tickets, prices, and reservations in the Friedrichsbau are not only answered but actively structured. And this is ultimately the goal of a good location page: not only visibility but usability. ([friedrichsbau-kino.de](https://friedrichsbau-kino.de/service/eintrittspreise/))

Barrier-Free Access and Practical Information

Accessibility is an important practical issue at the Friedrichsbau, which is described very concretely. The official accessibility page states that in the Friedrichsbau, only Apollo 1 and Apollo 2 on the ground floor are accessible for wheelchair users. For the step at the entrance of the Friedrichsbau foyer, there is a mobile ramp that the staff sets up upon request. At the same time, the cinema openly points out that the Friedrichsbau does not have a wheelchair-accessible toilet. This transparency is important because it allows visitors to plan realistically and does not create surprises on site. The page also recommends checking online or by phone on the day of the cinema visit which hall the desired screening is actually in, as last-minute hall changes are possible. For people with hearing or visual impairments, it is additionally interesting that the cinema shows all non-German films at least once in the original version with German subtitles and also works with the app Greta & Starks, which enables subtitles and audio description for selected films. This makes the house more accessible to a broader audience than the pure structural situation might initially suggest. From an SEO perspective, this is relevant for keywords like barrier-free, wheelchair, subtitles, and original version because visitors often ask very specific questions. The honest answer of the house is not that everything is barrier-free, but that there are clear aids, clearly named limitations, and sensible alternatives. This openness builds trust and is useful at the same time. ([friedrichsbau-kino.de](https://friedrichsbau-kino.de/service/barrierefreier-zugang/))

Organizationally, the Friedrichsbau also shows itself to be clearly structured. The official imprint page names the operator as Friedrichsbau-Lichtspiele GmbH & Co. KG and lists the same address on Kaiser-Joseph-Straße. Therefore, those searching for Friedrichsbau Lichtspiele GmbH & Co. KG receive a clear assignment to the house and the contact structure. Additionally, there are the usual service channels via email and website, which make the cinema accessible for programmatic, technical, and organizational questions. In practice, this means: visitors can not only check ticket prices and programs but also clarify the appropriate information regarding accessibility and access in advance. For a traditional cinema with several halls, this combination of history and functional information is particularly valuable. It alleviates some of the uncertainty of the visit and strengthens the expectation of a well-organized experience. Especially because the Friedrichsbau is so centrally located and addresses different audience groups, the combination of practical information, clear pricing rules, and barrier-related information is a real plus. Those looking for a cinema in Freiburg that is not only charismatic but also well-organized will find a lot of substance in the Friedrichsbau. Seating, Halls, and Capacity: This is How the Friedrichsbau is Structured

The capacity of the Friedrichsbau Lichtspiele is particularly important for search queries regarding seating, seating plan, and capacity, and here the house provides very concrete data.

Those looking for a cinema in Freiburg that is not only charismatic but also well-organized will find a lot of substance in the Friedrichsbau. friendly crew. cozy environment. but the salon I went in had a backwards slope (so the back row seats were lower than the front) and as a short person this means I had to move forward. They also didn’t have salty popcorn- only sweet (I was told I could go to the other cinema 10-15 minutes walk distance and grab it, but by the time I brought them popcorn was cold). But overall good experience, I don’t want to sound negative at all :)

Old school cinema with interesting movies that the big cinemas bypass. Nice theater going atmosphere and location. More importantly, the movies show in their original language and not dubbed over.
