Taking public transportation in Freiburg feels like a disaster: 1. Buses are unreliable and often leave early, sometimes two to three minutes ahead of schedule. Even when the driver clearly sees you running toward the bus, they still drive off. The timetables at stops and in the mobile app are useless, you can’t rely on them because buses either leave early or arrive late. 2. Transfers between trams and buses are terribly designed. If one is delayed even slightly, you’ll miss the next connection. 3. It’s obvious that Freiburg’s public transport system can no longer handle its growing population. Especially in the morning and afternoon, many trams and buses are extremely crowded. 4. Some of the trams are very old and don’t even have air conditioning. Taking bicycles onto trams is also not allowed, even though this is common in other German cities. Overall, the transportation system is disappointing compared to other German cities I have visited, despite having relatively high ticket prices. If you commute by bus or tram, be prepared to waste an extra 30 minutes to an hour every day.

I traveled a lot with the public transit in Freiburg during my trip in Germany, France, and Switzerland and I can tell that it is one of the best public transit systems I have ever traveled with so far in my life. The trams and buses are mostly modernized, the trams come quite often, usually with only 10-15 minutes in between, and all the stations are modernized too, having digital displays that show how much time is left until the next tram or bus departs. Freiburg surely has a very well-developed public transit.

Hello! I have a positive experience to share regarding lost property. My daughter left her glasses inside one of the Line 4 trains last week. I wrote to VAG asking if they have a lost and found system and they replied within an hour with a picture of her glasses included. There are so many things that could be improved. 1. Line 1 is late 90 percent of the time. This line has the absolute worst service! Sometimes the tram is late by 8-10 minutes, especially at night! 2. There is absolutely no night bus service! What? Don’t they know it’s a student city! Even the small cities in East Germany have night bus services. Why can’t we have it here! 3. The bus lines 35, 32, 34 could have higher frequency at least during peak rush hours. Surprisingly, bus line 35 (from Munzingen to Haid) has good frequency in the evening. But it’s too bad in the morning. (from Haid to Munzingen) 4. The buses are generally earlier than the given time. And the drivers sometimes tend to overlook people standing and waiting for the bus at not very busy stations.
