Freiburg Gymnastics Club of 1844 e.V. | Directions & Parking

The Freiburg Gymnastics Club of 1844 e.V. is much more than a classic sports club. It is a significant piece of Freiburg's city history, a modern recreational sports location, and a place where movement, education, and community have come together for generations. The FT Sports Park is located in the eastern part of Freiburg in Littenweiler, right in the sports mile, and offers a variety of activities for children, teenagers, adults, families, recreational and competitive athletes on one site. Therefore, when people look for FT 1844 Freiburg, they often mean not just a club, but a whole sports and living space with a swimming pool, gym, educational facilities, courses, outdoor areas, and an unusually strong connection between tradition and renewal. It is particularly striking that the FT does not maintain its history as a museum, but understands it as a living foundation for the present and future. This makes the location highly relevant for inquiries about directions, parking, opening hours, swimming pool, sports kindergarten, sports primary school, and modern sports offerings. FT Sports Park: Swimming Pool, gym1844, and Modern Sports Areas

The FT Sports Park is today a multifunctional, barrier-free, and sustainably designed sports location that has been extensively modernized in recent years. The official site plan document shows how many different areas come together on the premises: in the main building, there are among others the Schauenberghalle, Judohalle, Burdahalle, info point, and office; additionally, gym1844, TURNbox, PULSEraum, and SPIELzone are part of the structure. There are also the sports primary school, the ACT-NOW-HALL with a three-field hall, multimedia room, and fitness hall, the Olympiahaus with a sports daycare, integrative sports kindergarten, and nursery as well as the Hans-Evers-Haus with swimming pool and sauna. The ensemble is complemented by a gymnastics hall, dance room, ballet studio, functional playground, tennis tent, artificial turf field, grass field, beach zone, and other movement areas. This variety is one of the major advantages of the location, as it makes the FT Sports Park a place where not only training takes place but also learning, care, playing, and relaxing. The FT describes the sports park itself as barrier-free, sustainable, and multifunctional; many newly created areas are also accessible to non-members. This fits with the fact that the future concept has modernized the building stock and functionally and visually upgraded the location. For users, this means: short distances, clear structures, and a location that does not limit itself to a single sport but reflects the everyday life of many people. Swimming Pool, Sauna, and Water Sports at FT 1844 Freiburg

A particularly defining element of FT 1844 Freiburg is the swimming pool. According to the official website, it is the only pool in the eastern part of Freiburg and is also a public pool in private ownership. It is open to both members and non-members and features a 25-meter swimming pool, a diving pool with diving boards up to 3 meters, a 5-meter diving tower, a teaching pool, and a sauna. This combination makes the swimming pool interesting for different target groups: ambitious swimmers, families with children, course participants, and people seeking relaxation. Additionally, the pool not only allows for recreational use but is also integrated into the club's operations. The swimming department uses it for training sessions, and aqua and swimming courses are also held. At the same time, the University of Education Freiburg and the University of Freiburg also use the pool for teaching purposes. This results in varying opening hours during the semesters and semester breaks, as well as occasional closures due to competitions or special bookings. Therefore, those specifically looking for the FT 1844 swimming pool, swimming pool Freiburg East, or sauna in the FT Sports Park will find a rare overall offering that combines sports, education, and publicly usable infrastructure in one place. This is particularly noteworthy in an urban context, as the FT not only organizes club life but also provides a piece of local swimming infrastructure. For many visitors, the swimming pool is therefore one of the most important attractions of the entire site. ([ft1844-freiburg.de](https://ft1844-freiburg.de/hallenbad))

History and Club Development Since 1844

The history of the Freiburg Gymnastics Club of 1844 e.V. dates back to its founding year of 1844, when the gymnastics club was established by student medic Georg von Langsdorff. Just a few years later, in 1848, the club was banned and dissolved as a state-threatening organization due to the participation of an armed gymnastics group in the Freiburg Easter battles. After a forced break of twelve years, it was re-established in 1860. Already in 1861, a gymnastics school for boys aged 6 to 14 was established, and in 1864, girls' gymnastics was introduced for the first time. In 1895, the club founded a women's department as the first club in southern Germany. In 1905, the new sports facility was inaugurated on Schwarzwaldstraße. Another milestone followed in 1919 with the merger of the three Freiburg gymnastics clubs into the Freiburg Gymnastics Club of 1844 e.V. After the war-related reorganization, the old name was adopted again in 1951. In the following decades, the facility continued to grow: the Burdahalle was opened in 1963, the Schauenberghalle in 1969, the swimming center in 1971, and in 1972, gymnastics hall, restaurant, hotel, staff apartments, and ballet studio were added. During this phase, the idea of the first German sports kindergarten also emerged. In 1976, table tennis and judo halls were added. In 2007, the first sports primary school in Germany followed. This chronicle impressively shows that the FT has never been just a gymnastics club but a place of change where sports development, educational work, and infrastructure have grown together over decades. For inquiries about history, tradition, and special features, this development provides the crucial context. Children's, Youth, and Educational Sports at FT 1844

A core feature of FT 1844 Freiburg is its strong focus on children, teenagers, and education. The website emphasizes that the social pedagogical facilities of the club have been an important component of the overall offering for many years and that the FT was the first club in Germany to begin providing educational care for children on its own premises as early as the 1970s. Today, the club combines movement and care in six social pedagogical facilities as well as in the sports primary school. There, cognitive and motor development are consciously linked. This approach is particularly evident in the sports kindergarten Schwarzwaldstraße, which has existed since 1973 and is considered the first sports kindergarten in Germany. The facility works with four age-heterogeneous groups for children aged 1 to 6 years. For the older children, gymnastics, rhythmics, swimming, roller skating, trampoline, and other forms of movement are part of everyday life; for the younger children, swimming and rhythmics are primarily focused on. This is complemented by the state-recognized FT sports primary school, whose concept is based on education, movement, and relationships, daily movement lessons, and a moving learning concept. The club itself makes it clear that today over 3,000 children aged 0 to 14 are actively engaged in sports. For families, this is a strong argument, as not only courses can be booked here, but a whole educational system becomes visible. Therefore, those looking for sports kindergarten Freiburg, sports primary school, or children's sports at the FT will find a club that understands movement not as an addition but as an identity-forming component. Membership, Courses, and Special Highlights for Guests

In adult and recreational sports, FT 1844 Freiburg also shows itself to be exceptionally versatile. On the official website, the club is described as a large sports club with over 7,500 members, connecting 19 competitive sports departments with classic and modern sports. The mentioned disciplines include gymnastics, American football, and pickleball, among others. At the same time, the FT offers a wide range in the areas of fitness, health, and rehabilitation, which can also be partially used by non-members. This includes courses and training forms in small or large groups as well as personal training and the club's own gym1844. Outdoor and movement areas such as beach zone, racket zone, skill zone, athletic zone, and open play areas are also part of the concept. The FT explicitly emphasizes that many newly created areas are also accessible to non-members, making the location particularly open and low-threshold. This mix of competitive sports, children’s and family offerings, health courses, and freely usable areas is crucial for many inquiries about programs, courses, gyms, sports parks, and recreational offerings. The modern character of the location is further underscored by the fact that gym1844 moved into new premises on the upper floor of the main building in 2025, offering around 600 square meters of training space. Together with the sustainably modernized overall facility, this creates a location that intelligently combines historical identity and contemporary use. Those who want to not only visit FT 1844 Freiburg but truly understand it quickly realize: Here, sports are not thought of in isolation but as part of an open, social, and vibrant urban space. The last summer camp was an absolute disaster and a nightmare for my child. They came back without a comment or indication from the supervising staff, voiceless and hoarse, telling me they had been locked in the bathroom for so long and despite loud calling, no one came for over half an hour. This is unacceptable! The supervisors spent the whole week disinterested on their phones. What a shame - it can definitely be better. Never again ft.

The sports club is diverse and offers a lot of sports. Youth is greatly supported here. If you want to play actively, the Freiburg gymnastics club is the right place for you. Almost all sports are offered here, such as soccer, volleyball/beach volleyball, hockey, badminton, gymnastics, table tennis, etc.

I attended the roller skating dance show and was absolutely thrilled. I had no idea there was something so great in Freiburg. I'll definitely go again when it happens. Also happy to see it on a larger scale 👍
