Just to preface this before I get my head ripped off by someone: I find the staff absolutely lovely at this place, and I think they do a fantastic job running things overall. This is meant as constructive criticism from a native English speaker from the U.S. that has lived in Germany for 7 years now. First off, the positive: especially if you're a native English speaker, join the library. It's the only decent English-language library within several hours drive, and they do actually purchase some of the newest adult fiction novels and have the latest editions of various magazines. They also buy new DVDs. The young kids' selection is fine, though it seems based more on donations than anything else (i.e., don't expect the latest books in that area). The check-out and renewal policies for books are also (finally) convenient. The opening hours could be improved (e.g., longer on Saturdays when most people have time off), but that is minor. Here's my main complaint. The vast majority of the activities are geared towards non-native English speakers. Sometimes this is not noticeable (July 4 party is pretty awesome!), but other times this becomes a detriment to the enjoyment of the event itself and should be noted clearly ahead of time. But the bottom line is that you will be disappointed as a native speaker if you buy full membership and start attending these (unless your goal is to become a tandem partner, in which case, enjoy away!). Many, many events are in German, and I regularly receive (and promptly put in the recycling bin) flyers about English courses. (It seems I can't opt out of this...? Enlighten me how to do so if that's possible.) But if you just want one particularly telling example: I bought tickets for and very much looked forward to the sold out Colson Whitehead event, only to discover that 75% of the event consisted of someone reading selections from his book IN GERMAN. This was followed by a local native German lit-crit asking pointed questions to Whitehead (who seemed to be scratching his head over some of these questions himself) and then zero Q&A from the audience. Now maybe this is no big deal for locals and/or non-native German speakers, but what a waste of time for me, a parent who needed to book childcare for the event on top of the ticket price. This wasn't the only experience I had with an event run by CSH, but it is, to be sure, the last time I bother attending such an event.

An American-German organisation in Freiburg. For English speakers they have an extensive library of books and DVDs of films and television shows. You can read periodicals and the New York Times in the library. To take books and DVDs out of the library you need to become a member. That apart they have a large range of other activities for which it is best to consult their website.

For classes or an excursion to the library, always a great spot to go.
