Barbette - in the Old Wiehrebahnhof | Events & Tickets
The Barbette in the Old Wiehrebahnhof is one of those places that shape Freiburg not loudly, but with quiet certainty. Between the historic train station, the municipal cinema, and the vibrant district of Wiehre, a meeting point emerges that sounds of coffee, cake, and conversation during the day and of wine, snacks, and culture in the evening. Those who visit the Old Wiehrebahnhof do not experience an interchangeable gastro concept, but a piece of Freiburg's everyday culture, composed of film, market, neighborhood, and history. The space in front of the building changes with the days of the week, and therein lies the charm: on Wednesdays and Saturdays, there is a farmers' market, along with boules and table tennis, plus a café and a wine bar that enliven the place throughout the day. The old station is no longer a transport hub but a social meeting point. For guests looking for events, tickets, or a special café in Freiburg, the Barbette is therefore much more than just an address on Urachstraße. It is a place where culture and enjoyment reinforce each other, and where one does not just see Wiehre, but feels it. ([visit.freiburg.de](https://visit.freiburg.de/attraktionen/alter-wiehrebahnhof))
Events, Tickets, and Schedule at the Old Wiehrebahnhof
When people search for events or tickets for the Old Wiehrebahnhof, it usually concerns the Municipal Cinema Freiburg, which is housed in the building and culturally shapes the place. The official pages of the cinema feature their own schedule and ticket area, where current screenings, series, festivals, and special dates are bundled. There, not only film evenings appear, but also program points with introductions, discussions, or free admission. This is important because the Old Wiehrebahnhof is not a classic event center with a uniform event calendar, but a culturally curated place with a very specific profile. Visitors find here film culture, curated series, and events that are often connected with themes, festivals, or special evenings. The Barbette is embedded in this environment and benefits from exactly this mix: those who arrive before the screening can still enjoy a coffee; those who want to stay after the film can wind down the evening with wine or snacks. On the cinema's website, the café is explicitly anchored as part of the house, and the official tourism site Freiburg describes the Old Wiehrebahnhof as a place where the Municipal Cinema and a café are at home. Therefore, for inquiries such as events, tickets, or schedule, the most important insight is: it primarily refers to the cultural program of the Municipal Cinema, not a separate event location with a generic ticket platform. This makes the search even easier, as the program is clearly and regularly maintained. Anyone planning a cinema evening, a festival, or a special event should therefore check the schedule directly and secure tickets through KoKi. This often makes the visit to the Barbette part of a larger cultural evening, not just a brief stop before the show. ([koki-freiburg.de](https://www.koki-freiburg.de/das-kino/cafe/))
Access, Bicycles, and Parking on Urachstraße
The access to the Barbette in the Old Wiehrebahnhof is officially described as one would wish for an inner-city cultural location: as uncomplicated as possible, but with clear indications for various means of transport. The Municipal Cinema explicitly recommends arriving by bicycle, as there are sufficient parking spaces around the Old Wiehrebahnhof. This is particularly plausible for Freiburg, as Wiehre is a densely populated, well-connected district where the bicycle is often the fastest solution. Those who prefer to use public transport also have practical options. The cinema mentions tram line 2 to the Lorettostraße stop and line 1 to Schwabentorbrücke; additionally, one can take the Höllentalbahn to the new Wiehre station. For visitors coming from the city center or other Freiburg districts, this is a significant advantage, as the journey can be easily planned without a car, making the visit more relaxed. The location is also accessible by car, but parking is not directly at the house, but across from the Old Wiehrebahnhof at Urachstraße 25, and is subject to a fee. Thus, it is clear: those who want to arrive calmly should not spontaneously rely on direct parking in front of the door, but rather plan their visit either by public transport or bicycle. The location on Urachstraße also links historical ambiance with urban functionality. The Old Wiehrebahnhof is not located in a remote area, but in the middle of a developed neighborhood where living, culture, and local supply are close together. This makes access for guests very pleasant: one arrives quickly but does not need a lucky parking spot if one plans the journey cleverly. For evening bar visits, film screenings at KoKi, or weekend appointments with market visits, it is always worthwhile to take a quick look at the means of transport and the parking situation. ([koki-freiburg.de](https://www.koki-freiburg.de/das-kino/service/anfahrt/))
Farmers' Market, Boules, and Table Tennis Outside the Door
A crucial part of the attraction of the Old Wiehrebahnhof is the public space in front of it. The official Freiburg tourism site clearly describes that a farmers' market takes place on the square around the Old Wiehrebahnhof on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Additionally, there are boules courts and table tennis tables, exactly those low-threshold offers that transform a place from a mere visitation point to a true neighborhood center. This mix is particularly valuable for the Barbette because it structures the course of the day: in the morning and early afternoon, the market attracts people, in the afternoon there is room for café visits, and in the evening the place is further utilized by the cinema and wine bar. Therefore, those who visit the Old Wiehrebahnhof experience not just a building, but a small urban stage with changing roles. On market days, the square is lively, informal, and approachable; on other days, it feels quieter, almost neighborly. This creates the feeling that the Barbette does not exist in isolation, but stands in the midst of a vibrant microcosm. For guests looking for a restaurant, café, or a sight with added value, this is a real benefit: one can combine the visit with the market, boules, or a walk through Wiehre. The surroundings are not just decorative but concretely shape the user experience. Those who come to the market on Saturdays find a different atmosphere than someone who has a drink after a cinema visit on Wednesday evening. This combination is also strong from a tourism perspective because it showcases Freiburg's everyday culture instead of merely ticking off classic sights. The Old Wiehrebahnhof is thus not a museum of city history, but a place where urban life reorganizes itself anew every week. And this is exactly what makes the Barbette so relevant as a destination for inquiries about events, opening hours, markets, and meeting points. Barbette as a Café and Wine Bar: Opening Hours, Atmosphere, and Offerings
The Barbette is officially anchored as a café in the Old Wiehrebahnhof, described by the Freiburg tourism site as a charming café and wine bar with a relaxed atmosphere, and presented by the Municipal Cinema as a café in the Old Wiehrebahnhof. In practice, this means: during the day, coffee, cake, and small snacks; in the evening, wine and a place to linger. The Café Huber website emphasizes that one can first walk through the market on Saturdays and then enjoy a coffee or cake; in the evening, there is a glass of wine with a view of the Sternwald. This combination of daytime café and evening bar is characteristic of the Barbette because it is not reduced to a single occasion. The cinema's opening hours also show how broadly the Barbette is integrated into everyday life: Mondays and Tuesdays from 6 PM, Wednesdays from 1 PM, Thursdays and Fridays from 4 PM, Saturdays from 9 AM, and Sundays from 12 PM. This covers both market visits and afternoons as well as late evenings. This is particularly attractive for visitors looking for a flexible café in Freiburg, as one is not squeezed into rigid lunchtime windows. The atmosphere is characterized by the official descriptions as relaxed, charming, and enjoyment-oriented, without artificial enhancement. The spatial integration is also important: the Barbette is not just any establishment near the Old Wiehrebahnhof, but the café in the building. This creates a special connection between culture and gastronomy. Those going to the cinema have the café directly in mind; those coming for the café often discover the cinema as well. This mutual reinforcement makes the place so strong. For SEO, relevant terms are therefore not only café and wine bar but also opening hours, snacks, coffee, cake, market, and Sternwald. All these aspects are real usage occasions and explain why the Barbette is of interest to locals as well as to guests who want to experience Freiburg-Wiehre specifically. History of the Old Wiehrebahnhof in Freiburg-Wiehre
The Old Wiehrebahnhof lives not only from its current use but also from its history as part of Freiburg's urban development. The citizens' association Mittel- und Unterwiehre describes that Wiehre came into focus for wealthy citizens around 1860 due to urban and economic development. At the same time, the Badische Hauptbahn emerged as an important railway connection, and in 1861, a railway committee was founded in Freiburg to accompany the further transport development of the city. It was clear for Wiehre: the growing district should have its own train station. The building of the Old Wiehrebahnhof was inaugurated in 1890/91, marking a time when the railway and urban expansion were closely linked. At the same time, history shows how quickly infrastructure changes. As early as the late 1890s, a relocation of the Höllentalbahn was discussed because the rail crossings in the urban area were considered disruptive and dangerous. The description by the citizens' association makes it clear that there were numerous equal crossings of tracks and streets at that time, and that the realignment became inevitable in the long term. This development led to the current situation: the former station was detached from its original transport function and transformed into a culturally and gastronomically used place. This is particularly interesting for visitors because at the Barbette, one does not just consume but sits at a historical transition point. The place exemplifies many Freiburg urban spaces where mobility history, neighborhood development, and today's quality of life intertwine. Therefore, when visiting the Old Wiehrebahnhof, one experiences not just a pretty building but a piece of city history that remains readable to this day. Especially in combination with the café and cinema, this creates an authenticity that modern new buildings rarely offer. The history explains why the place feels so distinctive despite its new use. Practical Tips for Your Visit to Freiburg-Wiehre
Those who want to visit the Barbette should not only see the place as a café or as a cinema addition but as a small building block of an entire Freiburg day. It is most sensible to adapt the visit to one's own occasion: those who love market atmosphere come on Wednesdays or Saturdays and combine shopping with coffee or a glass of wine. Those seeking culture should first check the KoKi schedule and plan the evening around a film or special event. Those who want to arrive relaxed should choose the bicycle or tram, as the location in Wiehre is very well suited for that. For drivers, it is important that the parking spaces are not directly in front of the house but across the street at Urachstraße 25, and that parking fees may apply there. The place is also interesting for families, groups of friends, or couples because it brings together several types of use in a small space: breakfast times on Saturday, market visit, cinema visit in the evening, wine bar atmosphere in between. This versatility makes the Barbette in the Old Wiehrebahnhof a location that does not need to work with grand promises. Its charm lies in the interplay of historical address, local anchoring, and reliable opening hours. Those visiting Freiburg often look for places that feel authentic and not staged. The Barbette fulfills this need precisely because it is neither oversized nor arbitrary but integrates into the everyday life of a neighborhood. For SEO inquiries about events, tickets, opening hours, access, and parking, it is therefore particularly relevant. Those who want to get the most out of their visit should also plan a small walk through Wiehre or a detour to other destinations in the district. This way, a café visit becomes a whole neighborhood moment, and a cinema or market address becomes a true Freiburg experience.
Very nice market with a beautiful atmosphere. Here you can buy local vegetables, fruits, alcohol or even knit socks. In the middle is a small cozy cafe where they also have coffee with the size of a small soup. Prices can sometimes be negotiated.

Great place to meet up with friends in the evening. Lots of people playing board games. They even have a small movie hall that screens low-budget movies (German and international).
