125 Years of Tram: Freiburg Drives History

On Wednesday, October 14, 2026, Freiburg's tram history comes alive: To celebrate the 125th anniversary of the first electric ride, Freiburg Transport AG invites you to free historical special rides through the city. Two special vehicles combine nostalgic driving experience, local history, and the authentic atmosphere of a dynamic transportation era.

Through Freiburg with Historical Vehicles

The vehicles utilized will be the railcar 56 from 1927 and the GT8K tram known as the Pepsi-Bahn from 1983. Both vehicles will travel sequentially through Freiburg, providing a unique way to experience the city's cultural heritage. Music on board and small gifts will enhance the discovery experience.

From Lorettoberg to Moosweiher

The special ride begins at 5:04 PM at the Lorettostraße stop heading towards Europaplatz. The route includes stops at Bertoldsbrunnen, the City Theatre, Rieselfeld, Brühl, Vauban, the Music Academy, the Messe, and Moosweiher. The historical tour will end back at Lorettostraße around 8:35 PM.

Along the way, Freiburg unfolds from an unusual perspective: well-known neighborhoods, squares, and sights pass by the window while the historical vehicles become a rolling museum. The ride demonstrates how closely mobility, city development, and daily life in Freiburg have been interconnected since 1901.

A Jubilee of Historical Significance

On October 14, 1901, Freiburg entered the era of the electric tram. The first ride ran from Rennweg to Günterstal. The same year, a connection between the main train station and Bleicheweg was established. Today, the tram is one of the defining elements of Freiburg's cityscape, linking the city center, residential areas, and important excursion destinations.

Important Notes for Passengers

Riding is free and does not require prior registration. From 5:04 PM to 6:27 PM, only the Pepsi-Bahn will be available for unregistered passengers, as a booked city tour takes place in railcar 56 during this time. After that, riding in the historical railcar 56 will also be possible.

Conclusion: Experience Freiburg's Transport History Up Close

The historical special rides offer a rare opportunity to discover Freiburg's local history on a free city ride. Those who wish to combine nostalgic trams, technical cultural history, and unique city views should board at one of the planned stops on October 14, 2026, and experience the anniversary on rails.
