Telling Stories with Pictures: Creative Comic Workshop in Freiburg

When an idea becomes a story, the adventure begins on paper. In the Creative Comic Workshop on October 16, 2026, children from nine years old will discover the basics of visual storytelling in the Freiburg City Library and develop their own comic.

Step by Step to Your Own Story

Under the guidance of the artist and illustrator Carmen Luna, participants will learn how a comic is structured dramatically. Characters are created not just through lines: body posture, movement, and facial expressions give them character, pace, and emotional depth.

Faces, Movements, and Comic Effects

The workshop combines drawing practice with narrative thinking. Children will experiment with different comic effects and learn how exciting narrative sequences arise from individual images. Imagination, observational skills, and the joy of their own style are at the forefront.

A Literary Experience with Visible Results

Comics combine imagery and text into a standalone art form. The workshop offers a playful approach to plot, character development, and visual dramaturgy. At the end of the four-hour creative offering, all participants will have drawn their own story and will take home a personal result.

Words & Vibes – Book Festival Freiburg

The creative course is part of the Words & Vibes book festival and situates comic drawing in a vibrant literary scene. In the atmosphere of the city library, reading is expanded into a productive dimension: children become storytellers themselves and experience how a story grows from language, image, and their own imagination.

Conclusion

The Creative Comic Workshop promises an inspiring encounter with authors and art without frontal teaching: with Carmen Luna, children from nine years old will develop characters, movements, and their own narrative worlds. Anyone who wants to not only read comics but also create them will experience a creative afternoon full of language art, drawing joy, and visual imagination in the Freiburg City Library.
