Alberta's Wish Shop: A Colorful Journey into the World of Wishes
At the 33rd Freiburg Children's Literature Festival, Martina Walther takes children from the age of seven into the imaginative world of Alberta Brocante. On Friday, October 16, 2026, the Literaturhaus Freiburg opens for a child-friendly reading full of quirky ideas, bright images, and surprising finds.
A Shop Full of Small Wonders
Clouds to wear, parking spaces to roll out, and sea to take with you: Alberta finds the right thing for almost every wish. An egg cup in the shape of a dromedary helps with double hunger, a grumpy cloud provides refreshment, and building blocks bring clear form language to the shelf. The imaginative story invites children to discover their own wishes and playfully think about needs, helpfulness, and resourcefulness.
Picture Book Art to Marvel At
Martina Walther combines illustration, collage, and narrative details into an overflowing picture book world. Her colorful image ideas promote attentive observation, joy of language, and childlike imagination. For families, it creates a special learning experience: children experience literature not only as a read story but as an invitation to ask questions, laugh, and think further.
Literature Experience for Children Aged Seven and Up
The event is aimed at children aged seven and up. The age-appropriate format strengthens reading motivation, imagination, and shared experiences. As a guest reader at the Freiburg Children's Literature Festival, Martina Walther brings her experience as an illustrator and picture book maker. She studied Illustration Fiction at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts and works in her studio with drawing, painting, collage, and other materials.
A Festival for Curiosity and Time Together
The Freiburg Children's Literature Festival has been organized by the Cultural Office of the City of Freiburg since 1994 and takes place in collaboration with cultural institutions, schools, libraries, associations, and bookstores. Throughout several festival days, readings, exhibitions, and activities around children's literature are on the program. The event at the Literaturhaus is weather-independent and accessible according to DIN 18040.

Alberta's Wish Shop offers families a warm, imaginative literary experience filled with children's laughter, surprising images, and many conversation prompts. Anyone eager for a colorful story and shared time full of learning fun should experience Martina Walther live at the Literaturhaus Freiburg.
